Railroad Earth take the place as the first Artist of the Week ever posted on this blog. I came across this band during my random walks into the world of Jambands. Their songs Mighty River and A Long Way To Go struck me immediately and caught on.
Railroad Earth are a roots, bluegrass, americana-based jamband. They are roots/bluegrass becuase they use instruments like the Banjo, Mandolin, Violin.
The band derives its name from Jack Kerouac’s prose-poem October in the Railroad Earth
They are known for their extensive improvisation and superior lyrical quality. Both their songs Mighty River and A Long Way To Go both have simple structures, catchy rhythm, superior lyrics, and themes that touch on life, hope and progression.
A Long Way To Go starts out like John Lennon’s rendition of Ben E King’s Stand By Me and the theme of the song borders on the eternal words of Robert Frost’s Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.
I have embedded here the mp3 of the songs from their website. You can download and listen to them at archive.org’s collection of free music.
